People with Type 1 or 2 Diabetes should have annual or semi-annual dilated vision exams.  Uncontrolled blood sugar can lead to vision problems and if left undiagosed and untreated, permanent loss of vision.  You should start having check-ups as soon as you are diagnosed with diabetes.
